Diving Similan Surin Richelieu Rock, Phuket Phi Phi Hin Daeng
The
Similan, Koh Bon & Koh Tachai
The Similan Islands are located about 100km northwest of Phuket and are part of the Thai
National Marine Park. As well as the underwater landscape
the Islands themselves also have beautiful white sand beaches
and clear warm tropical water perfect for snorkeling.
The Islands are famous for their diverse fish life ranging
from the very smallest for macro photography to the largest,
including turtles, dolphins, eagle rays, pilot & minki
whales and several different types of sharks.
Some of the Similan Islands more spectacular dive sites
are: Elephant Head, Fantasea Reef, Shark Fin Reef, Christmas
Point, Boulder City and East of Eden. Though each of these
locations has its own characteristics, they all share the
underwater panorama that is uniquely Similan.
Koh Bon is only a short cruise North of the Similan
Islands and the main dive site follows a submerged ridge
covered in pastel shaded soft corals which drops to depths
of 35-40m. Mantas, Leopard and Black Tip Reef sharks are often
spotted over the ridge or in the deep water to the South.
Koh Tachai lies about 20 nautical miles South of Richelieu
Rock and has a series of large submerged sea
mounds, making there way towards the island. The top of the
reef is a beautiful mixture of hard corals, while deeper regions
consist of scattered boulders and sea fans. Leopard sharks
are commonly found resting on the bottom, while schools of
Barracuda and Batfish cruise around the reef. With the converging
currents this is a great dive site to see Manta rays, Whale
sharks, and many reef sharks.
